Introduction

The word “myrrh” has an ancient tradition in the Orthodox Church and, although it is often simply associated with a fragrant oil, its liturgical meaning is much deeper.

What is myrrh?

Myrrh, in its strict liturgical sense, is olive oil into which dozens of aromatic plants have been mixed and consecrated — according to the tradition of the Holy and Great Myrrh. (OrthodoxWiki)

There are also scented oils intended for home use, but the difference is essential: liturgical Myrrh is blessed and carries grace for sanctification. (Doxologia – Orthodox Christian Portal)

Role and use

Myrrh is used in solemn services: baptism, chrismation, and the consecration of churches. (Doxologia – Orthodox Christian Portal)

At home, a blessed oil (simple anointing oil) may be used with reverence during prayer or moments of blessing.
